Ooty, locally known as Udhagamandalam, is a popular hill station located in the scenic Nilgiri Hills in the Western Ghats. The hill town was originally occupied by the Toda tribe and then the East India Company in the 18th Century. Ooty’s economy is based on its tourism, agriculture, and the manufacture of photographic film, medicines and needles. Ooty is well connected to its neighbouring towns by an extensive road network with bus services run by the TNSTC and KSRTC to every major South Indian city. The town is connected to Mettupalayam via the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The closest airport to Ooty is the Coimbatore International Airport about 96 km from the town. This hill town has a number of comfortable lodging options, owing to its importance as a tourist destination. Most 2-star hotels in Ooty are located near affordable tourist attractions, the bus stand, railway station, and close to NH67. These are usually small hotels that are about two to four stories high and are perfect for solo travellers, businessmen and families on a budget. You can expect to find basic rooms that are clean and well-maintained. Most Ooty 2-star hotels do not have an on-site restaurant but don’t worry as there a plenty of affordable eateries around to choose from.
