Ooty, locally known as Udhagamandalam, is a popular hill station located in the scenic Nilgiri Hills in the Western Ghats. The hill town was originally occupied by the Toda tribe and then the East India Company in the 18th Century. Ooty is well connected to its neighbouring towns by an extensive road network with bus services run by the TNSTC and KSRTC to every major South Indian city. The town is connected to Mettupalayam via the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The closest airport to Ooty is the Coimbatore International Airport about 96 km from the town.
